Pothong River in Pyongyang​

Pyongyang, May 21 (KCNA) -- The picturesque Pothong River flows across Pyongyang, the capital city of the DPRK.

Built on the bank of the Pothong River were multi- and low-storied houses, monumental edifices of unique architectural beauty and beautiful parks and pleasure grounds, which remind one of a beautiful picture.

Since olden times the Pothong River had been called the river of tears and disaster as the river overflowed, being vulnerable to even little rain.

President Kim Il Sung attended a ground-breaking ceremony for improving the Pothong River on May 21, Juche 35 (1946) and took the first shovel for building our country. Since then, it has transformed into a river full of the people's happy laughter.

That day, the President told the participants in the river improvement project that the project was the first grand nature-remaking project of the Korean people after national liberation. And he called upon the Pyongyang citizens to hasten the project by giving full play to the patriotic devotion and creativity, spruce up the democratic capital city of new Korea and thus contribute to building a prosperous democratic, independent and sovereign state.

In hearty response to his patriotic call, the Pyongyang citizens worked a miracle of removing more than 420 000 cubic meters of earth and building 5 km-long embankments to finish the project within a matter of 55 days.

Later, the President turned the banks of the Pothong River into excellent leisure grounds for the people.

The Pothong River turned into a more splendid one thanks to Chairman Kim Jong Il.

The magnificent streets, leisure grounds, Changgwang Health Complex, Chongryu Restaurant, Ice Rink and other edifices of peculiar architectural style built on the banks of the River Pothong are associated with his wise leadership.

The history of love for the people is given steady continuity thanks to the energetic guidance of the respected Comrade Kim Jong Un.

The park and pleasure ground of the Pothong River were renovated as required by the new century, the Mansugyo Fish and Meat Shop and other commercial service facilities were successfully built. Last year the Pothong Riverside Terraced Residential District was built for ordinary working people, adding to the joy and laughter of the people.
